Perhaps you’re wondering why I’d recommend a book if I’m only giving it 2.5 out of 5? That’s not even half, is it even worth reading?
That’s fair, I’d question it too.
For the right person, this book could really strike a chord, and just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean I can’t see the value in other people reading it.
Stop Caring So Much
My main take away from The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*** was that Knight thinks people care too much.
My relationship with this book was therefore a little…fraught. I, for one, think it is impossible to care too much. How could passion ever be a bad thing?
After getting through the book, which I struggled with due to the amount of times the f-word was used, I can safely say I get her point. And you know what? It’s good advice for a graduate who isn’t sure what they’re doing in life. Sometimes we can care less about other people; whether that means not caring about what they’re doing, or not caring what they think of us.
The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving A F*** is about facing the truth that we don’t have the time or energy to waste on things that aren’t important to us. For me, it was a little strong in pushing this message (sometimes you can care just a little bit in order to be polite), but I can’t say Knight is wrong about having a limited numbers of f***s and the fact we shouldn’t waste them.
Why I Recommend: Giving Less of a F***
This one’s pretty simple. You can spend your whole life caring what people think and doing what you think they want you to. But the truth is, no one cares more about your life than you do, so you’re the most important person to please.
Think about how much you care about other people. Your instinct might be to say a lot – mine is too. And that’s totally okay. But think about how you care about them. You want them to be okay? To be happy and fulfilled? That’s great. But let’s be honest, you don’t care about how they live their life (as long as they aren’t hurting anyone)… do you?
If you do, this book is definitely for you because you should probably refocus yourself – spending too much time caught up in other people’s lives leaves you less time to live your own.
And if you don’t, well I still think this book could be worth a glance: it’s good to remind yourself that you don’t always have to care.
