5 Lessons the ‘Law of Attraction’ Taught Me

When I was in the eleventh grade, I read Rhonda Byrnes' 'The Secret' for the first time, and people could not shut me up.

When I was in the eleventh grade, I read Rhonda Byrnes’ ‘The Secret’ for the first time, and people could not shut me up. I couldn’t stop gushing about the law of attraction – I felt like I’d discovered the Holy Grail of the universe. The secret to getting everything that I’d ever wanted.

But more than that, what the law of attraction taught me was that if you had a negative outlook on life, you would attract more negative things. It reminded me of a time when things kept going terribly wrong. One morning, I had slept through my alarm clock and missed my school bus, which made me frustrated. I decided to drive to school, when a man driving to work cut me off and gave me the finger. At that point I was so angry and accepted that I was destined to have a bad day, and guess what happened; the bad day continued, up until I went to bed. The secret taught me that if something bad happens, if you spend energy on it and let it affect you for longer than a few moments, you will attract more “bad” things. If you brush it off and try to make the best of a situation, you will attract good things and have a better day.

The law of attraction taught me a lot, but here are 5 big lessons I learned:

1. Get Rid of Your ‘Why Me?’ Mentality

The law of attraction taught me to eliminate the “Why Me?” mentality, meaning the idea that you were just meant to have bad things happen to you because the universe or the world or God is against you. No one is against you. Bad things happen to everyone – that’s life.

If you think that the world is against you, it won’t make you feel better. You will wallow in self-pity and when other bad things happen, you’ll only get more discouraged and hopeless. If your energy is focused on the doom and gloom and you are putting out those vibes, good things won’t be attracted to you. You get what you put out. Which leads me to my next point:

2. The Universe is On Your Side

Everything happens for a reason, and that reason is there to help you.

When a bad thing happens, we automatically wonder why. Why did this have to happen? What is the reason? My life would be so much better/easier if I’d gotten what I wanted!

But here’s the secret: the universe is always working in your favour. If you didn’t get something that you really wanted, it’s either because it isn’t good for you, or because the universe wants you to work harder to teach you a lesson to prepare you for something else that you’ll have to face later on in life, that you will conquer because you overcame this obstacle.

“Everything happens for a reason, and that reason is there to help you.”

3. It Takes Hard Work

The law of attraction isn’t magic. You don’t click your heels three times and voila: everything you ever wanted, served on a gold platter.

You have to put in the hard work to get what you want. If you want to be a famous singer, for example, you have to be relentless, and practice your vocals regularly, scavenge for performance opportunities, and network tirelessly. You won’t be discovered sitting in the comfort of your own bed (well actually, maybe, if you’re posting YouTube videos online!).

Either way, you have to put in the hours and figure out how to get from point A to point Z. The law of attraction will just help you get there more smoothly.

4. Be Specific About What You Want

To get what you want, you have to know what you want. It can’t be vague, either. Many people enjoy making ‘vision boards’, which are essentially a wall of visual representations of all the things that you desire in life. It can be pictures of a family, travelling to Japan, your own future house, to get into a prestigious grad school – anything. When you know exactly what you want, you get that much closer to getting it. When you put your energy into it, it will be attracted to you as well.

5. Stay in Touch With Your Intuition

One mistake a lot of us make is ignore signs from the universe. Sometimes, something great is right in front of you but you’re so focused on something else that you may miss it completely. After learning about the law of attraction, I became very conscious of myself and the things happening in my life. I began to trust my intuition in what felt right and what felt wrong and it helped me through a ton of difficult decisions. Every person is gifted with a strong intuition and once you learn how to use it, you will get what’s best for you every single time.

The law of attraction got me through a ton of hard times in my life, and while I still have many goals and aspirations, I have achieved many of my old ones as well, and I owe it to this little secret.
